<image:title>Blog - Growing Together: Groundwork Erie’s 2025 Annual Report - Growing Together marks Groundwork Erie’s inaugural annual report and a milestone moment for our organization. This first report affirmed what Groundwork has long believed: real change happens when people, land, and opportunities are nurtured together. From youth stepping into green workforce leadership, to neighbors planting and caring for trees, land, and our local food system, our work in 2025 was shaped by collaboration, listening, and shared growth. This report reflects a year of learning and momentum and the collective effort of partners, residents, and young people who are growing a healthier, more resilient Erie alongside us.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - PWYC Market Season Finale - Nurta</image:title>
<image:caption>September started and the Green Team went back to school. This meant the Wednesday and Friday PWYC markets became solely the role of Groundwork Erie staff… except for one remaining Green Teamer. Nurta was so dedicated to the market season that she would walk to our East Ave market each Wednesday after school to help set up and run things at the stand. She was a very versatile market worker, filling in with whatever was needed from her that day. She wielded her clipboard and pen while taking down weights of produce bags and tallying market guests. She restocked tables when food started to get low. And of course, as she dubbed herself “the taste tester,” she would snack on new items each week and share her thoughts with neighbors. Her favorite food she tried all summer was, “the thing that looks like peaches…NECTARINES!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Celebrating a Green Team Summer - The Neighborhood Beautification team, mentored by Miss Andrea, went out across downtown Erie to, in her words, “care for Groundwork’s immediate neighborhood through both work and presence.” Her five Green Teamers, Diego, Ethan, Aria, Keshaun, and Mohammed, were definitely a presence - strutting across town in their bright Green Team shirts and safety vests, wielding weed-whackers and trash grabbers. The group of five went out each day to mow lawns, pick up trash, and whatever else had to be done to make our city a little more beautiful.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Celebrating a Green Team Summer - The Farm to School team had four members: Ja’Siyah, Annabelle, Samish, and Ella. Led by Mx. Camille, this team would travel to 3 different school gardens. Between singing and dancing each day, they would harvest produce, water the plants, weed out invasive species, and maintain and beautify the gardens. Ella says “farm to school is about more than food, it's about building healthy habits for life.”</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Stepping Into September - ELEFTHERIA</image:title>
<image:caption>When it comes to hard-working green teamers, Eleftheria is a shining example. This summer, she worked alongside her other 4th St farm teammates each week to plant, water, weed, maintain, and harvest food for Friday’s market. When Fridays finally did come around, she took charge and was dedicated to her craft. Unloading produce from the van, setting it out on the tables in the most visually appealing way, organizing jumbles of fruit and vegetables underneath the tables to be our “backstock”, talking to customers about the foods they picked out, weighing bags of produce, tallying the number of people served. She did it all and she loved it all.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Stepping Into September - One of our most valued partners in our Pay What You Can effort is Post Apples Farm. This family farm has been in operation for over one hundred years, starting in 1890. Ana from Post Apples says “our farm has been rooted in this area for five generations, and it’s always been our mission to care for our neighbors while stewarding the land.” This care and dedication definitely extends to our Pay What You Can coalition, as Post Apples is always making sure we receive the freshest, tastiest produce. Ana works with our coalition to diligently pack and deliver our produce orders each week. She says she does this because she believes “everyone deserves access to fresh, local produce at its peak nutrition.” She echoes the values of the Pay What You Can model when she continues, “food is more than just a meal - it’s health, it’s dignity, it’s community.” We’re grateful to have someone like Ana and all of Post Apples Farm as part of our community. They show great passion and commitment to our local food system and believe by sharing their food with others they are “investing in a stronger, healthier community for generations to come.” Thank you Post Apples for all that you do!</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Market Month One - Done!</image:title>
<image:caption>As July comes to an end, we’re celebrating a successful first month of Pay What You Can markets! Groundwork Erie hosts two markets each week, supported by our Green Team youth. Wednesdays 4:00-6:00pm at ECAT (650 East Ave) Fridays 12:00-2:00pm at 4th St Farm (310 E 4th St) In our first four weeks of market, Groundwork Erie has served 261 people, giving out 812 pounds of food to the community! The motivation for these markets was to support our neighbors in their access to fresh, affordable foods from local farmers. With each person receiving an average of 3 pounds of produce at their own price, it seems like we’re on the right track!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Market Month One - Done! - PELAGY</image:title>
<image:caption>Pelagy is a member of this summer’s Groundwork Green Team. She works each Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with the rest of her team on our 4th Street Community Farm to plant and harvest fruits, vegetables, and flowers that we can use at our PWYC farmers markets. Not only does she contribute to the behind-the-scenes work, but she also helps run both the Wednesday and Friday markets often. Whenever Pelagy is working a market, she is diligent with her duties and caring to both the neighbors and her fellow Green Teamers. She views these markets as a way to “increase accessibility and inclusivity” - and she lives that out each week as she shares new recipes and different ways to cook produce with all. When asked her favorite market task, Pelagy explained that it was “to harvest the crop we grew…because while harvesting, you will eat some!” Don’t we all love a good, fresh snack! Thank you Pelagy for all that you do for the Pay What You Can markets.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Market Month One - Done! - TALES FROM MARKET</image:title>
<image:caption>One Wednesday this month welcomed us in the morning with dark skies and high humidity. The whole city of Erie was waiting for rain, and East Ave neighbors were waiting for produce. Our Groundwork Erie team managed to set up our tent and tables before we took shelter underneath from the big downpour soon to come. We debated closing the stand down early if the storm got too heavy - and it did get heavy! Nevertheless, 21 people still stopped by in the two hours we were open. People came with their umbrellas and raincoats. Others sprinted up in their soaked shorts and t-shirts. Some even stayed in their car as we packed their bags of produce for them. It was impressive to see neighbors brave the storm in search of fresh, local, affordable produce. Between those 21 people, this market gave out over 57 pounds of produce! It is clear that these Pay What You Can markets have an effect on our neighbors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Market Month One - Done! - Farms around Erie County have paired with our PWYC coalition to support the work we have been doing in our city neighborhoods. Blooming Valley Farms, a family run farm, has worked with us since the emergence of the PWYC market stands. Their entire variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown naturally and sustainably. We love to have their fresh produce at our markets! Tia Sue Spencer, our coalition’s main point of contact, has worked with us tirelessly over this first month to ensure each market has the produce they need. “I think fresh, healthy food should be available to everyone,” Tia Sue states. She continues her adoration for the PWYC model when she says, “This market gives them the opportunity to choose fresh fruits and vegetables and keep their dignity.” Autonomy and dignity are two of our main values when it comes to the market stands, and we’re grateful to have farmers like Tia Sue share our vision. She continues to go above and beyond for us always, and we are so happy to work with her. Thanks Blooming Valley Farms!</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - It Takes A Lot</image:title>
<image:caption>The weeds were tall, tangled, and filled with trash. Willie had been there to mow 2 weeks prior but our rainy spring made it a taller task than we first thought. As we began to cut back the weeds and clear the debris, we pulled out beer bottles, candy wrappers, and crushed plastic water bottles. There were children’s shoes. A dog collar (that we had to fish out of the blades of our mower). A mix of litter and debris. Each item was left behind on a lot that no one saw any reason to care for.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - It Takes A Lot</image:title>
<image:caption>Not all these items were random. They felt personal. Like the fragments of a life recently uprooted- a crib, a bag of clothes, dishware, and silverware. I started to wonder—was this the aftermath of an eviction? Did a family, just a few doors down, lose their home? Was this space now holding pieces of someone’s life that had nowhere else to go? In that moment, it became clear: this wasn’t just about cutting grass or picking up trash. This lot was telling a story—a story about housing insecurity, disinvestment of neighborhoods, and the silent struggles playing out in neighborhoods across Erie.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - It Takes A Lot</image:title>
<image:caption>What I saw in that space reflected something deeper: the interconnected crises shaping our community. The environmental crisis—vacant lots left to fill with litter and trash. The youth poverty crisis—young people growing up in neighborhoods with too few safe places to gather and grow. The housing crisis—families facing eviction, displacement, or substandard living conditions and leaving their belongings behind on an overgrown lot next door. And, perhaps at the root of it all, a crisis of care—where entire blocks have been overlooked for so long that neglect starts to feel normal and expected.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - It Takes A Lot</image:title>
<image:caption>If we as community members really care for our neighborhood spaces, how will we show up differently for each other? If we really care for each other, how will we show up differently for our land and our neighborhoods? Groundwork is more than just urban farms or tree planting or landscaping. It’s care. It’s attention. It’s the belief that even the most forgotten, uncared-for lot holds potential, and that healing a place and its land can be part of healing a community. It’s what happens when we turn vacant lots into gathering places, gardens, or youth project sites. It’s how we build belonging—one plot, one project, one neighbor at a time. The truth is, it takes a lot. It takes time. It takes listening. It takes showing up, again and again. It takes people willing to care. But Erie is full of people who care about our city. We’ve met them. And we are employing them this summer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - It Takes A Lot</image:title>
<image:caption>This is Erie’s moment to build a Greener Future together. But it will take a lot. Our federal government is divesting from this work: over $600,000 is on the line in federal funding terminations for Groundwork Erie and our city’s youth. But we know our community needs this work now more than ever.</image:caption>
